Molly’s Game is based on the true story of Molly Broom (Jessica Chastain), an Olympic skier who was responsible for running one of the most notorious high stakes underground poker games. This movie is Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut which details the events that ultimately led Molly to be the focus of an FBI investigation while detailing her childhood events and meetings with her lawyer Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba).
Jessica Chastain is mesmerizing as the highly intelligent aspiring law student who is lured into this secret life of luxury as she takes on the game for herself. Her character is flawed due to childhood events that make her stronger on the outside but emotionally scared on the inside. Idris Elba also delivers a strong performance as her attorney who is frustrated not only with the system for singling Molly out but also with Molly for not releasing pertinent information to the FBI. Their banter of dialogue in scenes together makes the movie even more enjoyable.
Aaron Sorkin truly delivers yet again in his exceptional screenplay for Molly’s Game. While the dialogue is fast-paced and witty, Molly’s true story is what makes this movie great. The source material is so interesting that you forget you’re sitting in an almost 2 1/2 hour film. Molly’s Game is worthy of every nomination coming its way as it has picked up two Golden Globe nominations already. With 2017 winding down, Molly’s Game is the last breath of fresh air needed in this saturated sequel and remake year in film. I would recommend you PAY to see this movie in theaters.
